The question is not whether you are capable of cleaning a gutter. It is whether the hour you spend is worth more than the hour you buy, once ladder risk, equipment you do not own, and the difference between a thorough job and a fast one are counted.

The four jobs below answer that question differently, and three of them turn on the same variable: what the person doing the work can see.

Gutters, and the two-story rule

Cleaning a gutter is easy. Working from a ladder at height is not, and the injury statistics for household falls are the reason this job appears on every list of things not to do casually.

The dividing line most people settle on is height: a single-story ranch with a low pitch is a reasonable Saturday. A two-story with a steep roof, or anything requiring the ladder to stand on a slope, is not.

What a good contractor adds beyond removing leaves: they flush each downspout and confirm water exits at the bottom, they check that the gutter still pitches toward the outlet, and they look at the fascia, drip edge and first course of shingles while they are up there.

A quick pass scoops the debris and leaves a downspout blocked at the elbow, which produces exactly the overflow you paid to prevent.

Ask for photographs. A crew that will not send a picture of the cleaned gutter and the running downspout may not have gone up at all.

Guards change the calculation without removing it. A screen or a hood keeps leaves out and lets needles and grit through, so a guarded gutter still needs attention, just less often and with the added step of removing and refitting the guard.

Anyone selling a system as permanent is selling something that will still be there in five years when the gutter overflows.

Dryer vents, and why the run matters

The job is lint removal from the duct between the dryer and the outside wall. On a short straight run through a rim joist, a brush kit and twenty minutes does it properly.

On a run that goes up through two floors, turns three times, and exits at a roof cap, a consumer brush kit reaches perhaps half of it and packs the rest.

The tell that it needs doing is drying time. Loads taking noticeably longer than they used to, or a dryer hot to the touch on the top panel, means restricted airflow.

Restricted airflow in a dryer duct is a fire mechanism rather than an efficiency complaint, which is the reason clothes dryer maintenance has guidance of its own from the Consumer Product Safety Commission in the first place.

A thorough job includes checking the exterior termination. Vent caps get blocked by bird nests and by flapper doors painted shut, and the best duct cleaning in the world does nothing if the last six inches are closed.

Crawl spaces, where looking is most of the value

Going under the house yourself, with a good light and old clothes, is worth doing quarterly. You are looking for four things: standing water or damp soil, a torn or fallen vapor barrier, insulation hanging down, and evidence of animals. Any of the four is a reason to make a call, and you do not need training to see them.

What a paid inspection adds is interpretation. Whether the moisture reading in a joist is seasonal or a problem, whether that discoloration is fungal growth or old water staining, whether the powder on the sill is termite or carpenter ant frass. That judgement takes experience, and it is the difference between a small repair now and a structural one later.

The pattern that works for most households: look yourself often, pay for a proper inspection every few years or after any event that put water in the ground near the house.

Heating service, which is not a comparison

This is the one job on the list with no reasonable do-it-yourself version. Filter changes and keeping the area around the unit clear are yours. Combustion analysis, heat exchanger inspection, gas pressure checks and flue verification require instruments and training, and the failure mode is carbon monoxide rather than an inconvenience.

There is a paperwork dimension as well: many manufacturers make annual documented service a condition of the equipment warranty. A missed year on a unit still under warranty can turn a covered part into an uncovered one.

What separates a real service visit from a sticker on the furnace is the report. A technician who spends forty minutes and leaves a printed set of readings, static pressure, temperature rise, and the condition of the burners and flue, has done the work.

One who spends twelve minutes and changes the filter has sold you a filter. Comparing this year's readings with last year's is where the value is, which means keeping the reports somewhere you can find them.

What varies by where you live

Two local factors reshuffle the whole table. Climate is the obvious one: gutter frequency is set by the trees over the roof, not by the calendar, and a house under conifers may need four visits a year while a house on an open lot needs one.

Crawl space risk tracks groundwater and drainage, which is why the same house design behaves differently two miles apart.

The less obvious factor is licensing. Gutter cleaning and dryer vent work are generally unlicensed trades, which means the pool of providers ranges widely and references matter more than credentials. Heating work is licensed nearly everywhere, and checking that license takes two minutes on a state website.

When the trade is unlicensed, verifying that a contractor carries liability insurance and workers compensation is the substitute, and it is worth asking for the certificate rather than taking the word.

Buy the jobs where height, instruments or interpretation are involved. Keep the ones where the value is simply looking often, because nobody will look at your crawl space as frequently as you will.
